What is Short Term, Solution Focused Therapy ?

Short-Term Solution-Focused Therapy is a goal-oriented, evidence-based approach designed to help individuals identify and implement solutions to their challenges in a limited time frame. This structured therapy model focuses on strengths, resources, and practical strategies rather than delving deeply into past issues.

Typically, sessions include:

  1. Assessment & Goal Setting – Identifying specific, achievable goals.

  2. Exploring Strengths & Resources – Recognizing past successes and available supports.

  3. Solution-Building Conversations – Shifting focus from problems to possibilities.

  4. Scaling & Progress Tracking – Measuring improvements and adjusting strategies.

  5. Implementation & Reinforcement – Practicing new coping skills and behaviors.
6-7. Refinement & Consolidation – Strengthening gains and troubleshooting obstacles.

  6. Closure & Future Planning – Reviewing progress and developing a maintenance plan.

This brief therapy model is ideal for individuals seeking focused, time-efficient support for specific concerns, fostering positive change in a structured and practical way.

Short-term Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT) is highly effective for addressing a variety of concerns, particularly those that benefit from practical, goal-oriented interventions. Some common issues that can be effectively worked on include:

Personal & Emotional Challenges:

  • Stress management

  • Anxiety (mild to moderate)

  • Low mood or mild depression

  • Building self-confidence

  • Coping with life transitions

Relationships & Communication:

  • Strengthening communication skills

  • Conflict resolution (partners, family, or workplace)

  • Navigating breakups or relationship changes

  • Setting and maintaining boundaries

Work & Performance-Related Issues:

  • Career decision-making or transitions

  • Overcoming procrastination and motivation struggles

  • Managing workplace stress or burnout

  • Enhancing leadership and team collaboration

Behavioral & Habit Changes:

  • Improving time management and productivity

  • Setting and maintaining personal goals

  • Developing healthier coping strategies

  • Building resilience and adaptability

Family & Parenting Concerns:

  • Enhancing parenting skills and confidence

  • Addressing family conflicts or dynamics

  • Supporting children/teens with emotional regulation

SFT is especially useful for people who want practical solutions in a short time frame, focusing on strengths, resources, and achievable changes rather than deep exploration of past difficulties.
